ED HERMES FOR PHOENIX
City Council District 4
Safe Streets
Moving around Phoenix should be safe, comfortable, affordable, and efficient for everyone, whether walking, biking, riding transit, or driving. Phoenix is the deadliest large city in the US for traffic fatalities and traffic crashes are the leading cause of death of Phoenix children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. As Chair of Phoenix’s Vision Zero Street Safety Committee, Ed’s already working to make our city a safer plan. On the city council, he will:
End the reverse lanes in midtown Phoenix that are known to increase crashes, severe injuries, and deaths
Eliminate the existing five-year backlog for sidewalk construction requests so that Phoenicians don’t have to walk in the middle of an unsafe street
Make it easier for neighborhoods to request sidewalks to make neighborhoods safer and more walkable, including eliminating the existing “veto” power that corporate-owned properties have to projects like this
Expand protected bike lines in targeted areas
Introduce secure public bike parking hubs near light rail stations and activity centers
