ED HERMES FOR PHOENIX
City Council District 4
Safe & Healthy Neighborhoods
Every Phoenician should feel safe while walking in their neighborhoods, going to work, to school, or taking public transit. Police play a critical role, but they are not the only solution to safe neighborhoods because safe neighborhoods don't just mean reducing crime, it also means making our city more livable and healthy. On the Phoenix City Council, Ed will:
Upgrade Phoenix’s 311 program so Phoenicians have a place to go for non-emergencies like debris in the road, welfare checks, and loose animals so police officers can focus on serious crime, reducing response times for emergencies
Promote community partnerships between police and neighborhood groups and ensure officers have the necessary tools and resources to respond to crime
Expand and toughen Phoenix’s police civilian oversight board to ensure accountability and transparency
Eliminate any cooperation between Phoenix Police and ICE so that city residents can trust police are working to protect them and not to further Trump’s illegal and inhumane deportation agenda
Create an independent Crisis Intervention Team, separate from Phoenix Police, to respond to mental health and substance abuse crises
Reduce heat deaths by expanding Phoenix’s cooling centers in the summer, partnering with unions to ensure safe conditions for workers outdoors, and expand shade and water fountains in parks and in neighborhoods
Launch a “Healthy Phoenix” partnership with local clinics and hospitals to increase access to health screenings and expand nutritional programs in schools community centers, and libraries
Activate, improve, and expand shading at neighborhood parks and trails so Phoenicians can more easily live a healthy lifestyle
